Compression fractures are a common cause of back pain in the elderly and should not be dismissed as a normal part of aging. Unfortunately, only 10-20% of patients with osteoporotic spinal fractures are diagnosed and treated. Without medical intervention, there is a 20-25% risk of experiencing another vertebral fracture within three years. However, appropriate medical treatment can prevent 50-60% of new fractures.
